Assessment is the intentional, systematic, and ongoing method of gathering, analyzing and using information from various sources about an academic degree program, administrative department, or academic or student support division in order to improve student learning, the student learning environment, or the processes that support the student learning environment through carefully designed changes to the program or department.

While academic programs focus on measuring student learning outcomes, non-instructional units generally focus on measuring outcomes that are important to the mission or function of the unit.
